Shared tethering

I travel several months a year in an RV, so I need internet on two laptops on an intermittent basis. I know I can tether a Droid using PDAnet, but is there a way to share the tether with another laptop, either with or without the use of a router? I really don't want to root the phone.

From what I've seen, wireless tether (which would be your only real option here without using a router) is only available on rooted phones.

If you have Win7 on one of the laptops it can be configured as an AP.

Why is Win 7 required to configure the laptop as an AP?

Windows 7 is the only version of windows that has a virtualized wireless interface driver. Its also the only version of windows in which stock drivers allow the wireless drivers to be places in infrastructure mode without hacking the driver stack.

There are several flavors of linux that allows this and Mac OS X has supported it since 10.2

The OP should be able to do what he wants through internet connection sharing on his laptops.

I haven't tried this particular configuration myself though.

I know the OP said they did not want to root, but I had three others using my droid as an access point last weekend "WIFI Tether". It works perfect. I intend to use this while camping as well. 2 clicks and you are up and running.

I used Vista and from a USB Broadband modem (similar to Droid USB tethering), shared the connection though a wired connection to a wireless router in which i had a xbox hard wired and another laptop wirelessly. I used the same technique to supply backup internet for our office when our T1 went down.

That is alot of trouble but it can be done that way as well. XP can handle ics that way as well.

Yes, I've used Wireless Tether for my laptop as well as my roommates. It worked flawlessly. My roommate couldn't believe his eyes. But the Droid has to be rooted. Not sure about PDAnet though.......

Thanks all for the ideas. I am getting a new Win 7 laptop soon, so I will try setting up an adhoc network. Seems like the easiest solution without rooting.
