Why in the world would anyone buy a smartphone without a data plan? That just doesn't make any sense to me...

To each his own I guess.

My current phone Samsung SCHI730 has windows mobile and wifi so it did pretty much everything I needed at the time ( had it for over 3 years now ) without the expense of the data plans.

that's what i'm preaching.. but what i forgot about was the wifi capability. if all you NEED it for is calls and text, then you could just do all the other fun stuff at a wifi hotspot.. depends on the user i guess.

exactly! i would be getting the data plan even if it were optional, i was just saying you could still do a lot with the phone without it. it would just severely cripple it's abilities MOST of the time

I spoke to a Verizon rep today about the security of the Verizon network vs. Wifi. He led me to believe that data transferred over the Verizon nework was secure, however, for Wifi you are not protected. For me this is very important since I would be doing banking , etc. online and need to be secure. Does anyone know if this is true? If it is, than this would certainly make it worth the money to be on the Verizon data plan.

$44.99 for the enterprise service, or $30 for the standard user.

If you plan on activating your phone to be used on Verizon Wireless, you will be required to have a data plan so this question isn't really relevant. As far as security goes it depends. There are some encryptions on WIFI networks that are more secure than CDMA technology, however compared to other wireless technologies CDMA is the most secure technology offered by US wireless carriers.
