What are these things?

Take a little flashlight and aim it at the very top of the Motorola Droid above the screen (vertically). You will see on the left side of the earphone, there are 2 "holes". 1 almost looks like a camera or some type of sensor, the other looks like a light or something. On the right side of the headphone, there's another one, then lastly, there's the actual notification LED that flashes.

one of the 2 on the left is the proximity sensor, turns your screen off when you put it up to your face for a phone call so you dont hit any buttons. The one on the right is the LED button for missed calls or txts. The other one on the left is the ambient light sensor i think, if you have your brightness set to "auto" then that sensor tells you screen how bright it needs to be depending on how bright it is outside.

There just for design. They serve no purpose
