What the he!! is a widget

Had my Droid for a couple days now and love it, but what exactly is a widget?
I've read folks saying "Having widgets is great"....what are widgets????

They are little applets that can be put on your home screens to control other things or display info. Such as the music widget. You can control your music without opening the application.
