Conflicting international information, some clarification please

Hello, new here, and need some help. I keep getting conflicting information from Verizon concerning the use of the Droid (and other Verizon services) internationally, and was hoping to get clarification here.

It started when I called Verizon to set my Boulder up for international use before going to Haiti. It did not work there. When I came back, they said the Boulder isn't an international phone. Ok, they should have told me that when I asked to set it up, but at least I know why.
I want an international phone for when I go back, and for other places I travel. I also want an iPhone type device, but with Verizon service. The Droid looked perfect. I spent about an hour on the phone with Verizon CS, and was convinced. I just needed to try it in person. I went to a Verizon store and they said it wouldn't work in Haiti, because it isn't a CDMA country.
I looked on line, and Haiti is a CDMA country. I called verizon CS again, and they said, yes, Haiti is CDMA and the Droid is CDMA, but it doesn't have international capability, that's why it won't work there.
Reading some of the threads here, it looks like it will work with wi-fi internationally, but not as a phone, hence, no internet without wi-fi.
What is the story? Thanks.

I really suggest looking into GSM-capable devices (GSM or CDMA/GSM hybrid) if you're travelling internationally -- depending, of course, on where you're traveling and what's supported there. Keep in mind that it's not only an issue of matching network technologies but matching the required frequencies as well. Not only that buy your carrier has to have roaming agreements if you're going to roam with your carrier.

With GSM, you can choose to purchase a local SIM and roaming agreements aren't an issue with that approach.

If you're going to travel internationally a lot the Droid isn't a good choice IMO.
