spcae bar exiting text window

While texting on my Droid II, I touch the space bar and am exited from edit mode and placed in the 'send' screen.
I then tap the body field and get back into edit mode. This happens every time I tap the space bar.

The line on the space bar is elongated and light blue.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
