Sync Documents??

Heya

I searched for a while on this, and I am still confused (pretty much my normal state, but still..) I want to be able to sync documents on my PC with my Droid via USB.

Can the Droid do this? I don't want to use Google Docs, and I don't want to BUY a 3rd party program. I don't want to email or transfer docs back and forth - I just want to sync em - like WinMo did. Heck, like the Palms did/do (I aint used a Palm in quite a while, so they may not do this anymore - but they USED to at least!)

My brother just returned his Nexus because he searched and searched for this BASIC feature and determined that Android Phones just cannot do this (at least not without spending some more money). Is this true? I know WinMo phones can do this "out of the box" with about 8 seconds of setup time. I was a WinMo user for YEARS.... and I aint never ever goin back... but this was a pretty basic feature that almost everyone used - and maybe took for granted.

Did Google really leave out this basic feature? The Android OS seems so well thought out, I have a hard time believing they dropped the ball on such a No-Brainer item

Don't get me wrong - my Droid rocks - I love it, best phone I have ever had. I aint returning it or anything like that... I just want to be able to sync my docs. If I can't, I guess I will have to live with it... but I will be very disappointed.

I think those are your only options at this point. I don't know of any apps that will do what you're asking. Yep, a bretty basic function that seems to have been ignored.

Out of curiosity, how come you don't want to use google docs? I guess it's limites as to file types, but it's better than nothing.

Well, I think Google Docs is a pretty poor replacement for Office 2007 (or even Open Office). Just bums me out - WinMo, which is inferior to Android is pretty much every way, does this natively... and people have used this feature for years. Seems amazing that Google overlooked the need for this feature, that or somehow convinced themselves it wasn't needed.

There are roughly 27,643 different ways to sync music to the Droid - yes, some of them cost money... why are there so few (and no good) solutions to sync docs to the Droid - I guess the program "Missing Sync" will end up being the only option for me.. but it costs $40!! The guy should at least use a gun! LOL!

Have you looked into something like Dropbox yet? They don't have an android client YET (but they are working on it) but it's easily accessed via the phones browser until then and won't require any 'extra steps' from your desktop side (and once they have the Android app it won't require anything their either).

I'm using SK Sync. It works similar to Windows Mobile, where you have a folder on your computer that you keep the documents that you want to sync. Works great for me.

i never used the auto sync in activesync since it creates its own folder to sync the files to. it's not the great of a feature, and if i really wanted to sync files between my pc and the device, i did so manually.

i'm not sure what the hangup on the issue really is. android is all about the ability to replace the default apps with the app of your liking. a third party app may be better for your needs.

don't take this message the wrong way. you have to get out of the old winmo/activesync relationship mindset and think about cloud computing.

the DROID/Eris/N1 are NOT business phones, but they do a decent job of getting the job done.
