Question Backup

Is there a need for a backup app in case you lose or damage your phone, I thought I read where everything gets backed up with google. Does that include paid apps?

your paid apps are backed up by google through their check out service and will be restored to your new phone. but your data in the apps will not be....passwords ect. use a backup program..they are not too pricey and mine has worked well....tested it to make sure...

@Backnblack

Really? I was like 99% sure that Google only backed up paid apps (through the Marketplace).

The marketplace doesn't back up anything. It just remembers what you paid for.

That much is true. I paid for FireWallet with my G1, switched to Alltel and lost Android [due to a move], and then got the Droid when Verizon took over.

I went back into the market to buy it again because I like it, and I was able to install it again at no cost.

As for contacts, as long as you have your gmail account SET TO SYNC CONTACTS, they will be saved, accessible from your computer [say, while you're working on getting a new phone], and will populate your contacts list on a new Android phone when you sign in.

Free apps, as far as I can tell don't transfer from phone to phone...I had downloaded several free apps on the G1 as well, but didn't see anywhere that I could view which ones I had...

ive actually gotten into the habit of doing a nandroid backup every few days and copying it to my laptop.

i do this just incase something happens to my droid i can just use the backup to restore the new phone.

There are several backup programs that will either send your data, apps, etc. to the SD card or a site. When I had my phone reset, my contacts were there and I could download all my paid apps, but only some of my free ones. I wonder if a restore from the SD card would prevent a lot of data usage, since I wouldn't have to download them again from the Market. I mean, let's say you have 60 apps (both free and paid). You're gonna have to restore them one at a time via the Market (assuming you remember all the free programs you had) vs a bulk restore from an app.
