the only thing I know is to install Handcent SMS it has a popup function when you get a new text.
Sometimes a "smartphone" is only as smart as its user.
You can also give SMS Popup a try. Not sure if it works on Android 2.0 yet as I don't use it myself, but give it a try and let us know if it works and if it is what you were looking for:

I am guessing from the replies that it is not an integrated option out of the box at this point that I can just browse to like on a lot of cell phones.

mine doesn't turn the screen on when i get a text message. i just enabled to "turn screen on for reminders" - but that doesn't seem very intuitive given that the initial SMS isn't a reminder, it's the real one.
If anyone ever sees one of these 3rd party SMS apps integrate with the Google Voice app, come back here and tell me!!
I know that the SMS Popup one does. I get popup notifications for voicemails and it even shows part of the speech-to-text in it.
Sms pop up crashes after I push reply.
