Manual update
Is it safe to update manually or can it ruin your phone?

It does the same thing as an OTA update. Just make sure you have a clean update beforehand.

I am assuming you mean manual update to 2.0.1 correct? Then that is pretty safe.
If you are referring to that update to 2.1(the version that is in the droid hacks forum) then that takes much more effort and knowledge. You would need to root your phone first and then follow several steps to get this done. Completely different then the first update I listed. This being said, if you follow the steps correctly and have a back up copy you are probably ok. Just be aware that doing this type of update could brick your phone if not done correctly.

Well I'm saying when 2.1 comes out and I choose to manual update will it be safe?

2.1 is out now. If you're asking if there will be a download similar to 2.0.1 I don't know. The OTA would have to come out first and someone would have to develop it off the OTA, provide a link to install the file, and probably some directions on how to do it. I did the manual install of 2.0.1 and it was easy. More then likely that will happen but the difference in time between when it comes out OTA and installing a manual update would only be about 10 days max.

Well then how did we have the manual update for 2.0.1 before I even received my OTA for it? o.O
But yeah I know the SDK is out for 2.1, but I was refering to what you stated above. I should probably be clearer about what I'm asking xD

You're wrong, we didn't. The OTA was out first, then the manual came out about 2 days later. It was just that the distribution of the OTA was done over a period of about 7 days. The first couple of days was just to a limited amount of people. It was a day or so after that first release that the manual was released.

I see well then my bad. Will this same process be continued for this update or will they just release the update at one time to everyone?

That's just it, nobody knows. My gut feeling is that's what will happen and if the 1/22 date holds true it MIGHT even start tomorrow. That would be 7 days before like the previous update.
If they do it that way however it will only go out to about a thousand people initially. Then they increased it each day, adding more people. They may take 2 days off and then started releasing to everybody.
All speculation of course. I'm hopeful.

As am I, (hopeful for tomorrow release)
I also wonder if they start with a certain region of the US when updating.
