Custom notifications question...
Here is what I want to do. I recorded two ringtone files, "Weather update" and "Reminder"... I use Handcent for messages, and I want the "Weather update" file to play when I receive a txt from weather.com. I set it up as the ringtone, but that doesn't make it do that for txt messages, only for calls. The other one I want to play whenever my calendar reminds me of something, but I can't figure out how to isolate calendar update notifications. I'm using Pure Calendar Agenda and Pure Grid Calendar.
So how do I do this? Anyone? Thanks in advance

always check to see if there are menu settings for every application. you can customize ringtones and notification types for messaging, email and the calendar by going menu - settings - ringtone (etc).

I don't know about Pure Calendar, but in Handcent you can go into the individual conversation, hit the customize button (top right for me, looks like a head with a gear), click on Notification Settings, and customize everything from the ringtone to the color of the LED and how often it flashes. This is independant of any other Handcent configuration you have done, so it could be one ringtone (or LED color, vibrate on/off, etc.) for everyone and a completely different one for a certain sender.
Make sure you put the tones in a folder called notifications on your sdcard (mine is in the root folder of the card) for them to be able to be used as notifications rather than ringtones.

640k: yeah I have tried... it is finding where each notification setting is within each app that is giving me trouble.
liquidzoo: cool, thanks... now the problem is that the ringtones I created with Ringdroid do not show up in the list. ARG! Help?

make sure on your SD card there are two folders..... 1) "ringtones" (all lower case) 2) "notifications" (again lower case). The files in these folders will show up in the lists for selecting either ringtones or notifications in whatever app you go to set one for
You can also manually put files in these folders that will show up in the selection lists

I had those folders set under a /media folder already... I copied them to the root of the SD card and tried again... no dice. The ringtones I made don't show up. They are .3gpp files--is that the problem?

All mine are .mp3's, try tossing a few in there to see if they show up.

Always a logical and simple answer
Try what he said... should work.

From what I understand, only aac, aac+, eaac, eaac+, ogg and mp3 files will work for sounds.
-
Nope. No dice with putting mp3 files in either notifications folder.
