Droid Broken Screen, how to go about getting replacement

I recently dropped my Droid and have a hairline crack across the screen. It's barely noticeable and phone still works fine. I did not get the extended insurance that Verizon offered and am now trying to figure what I can do, if anything.
I've done a lot of searches of forums and google and have gotten mixed discussions on things. I've read in more then one place of people getting replacement Droids for $50 from Verizon (not under the extended warranty) under the 1 year warranty that Verizon offers. I went into a Verizon store to inquire and they basically said that if it's accidental damage then the manufacturer warranty won't cover it, which makes sense to me.
Anyone have any insight into this?? If I don't have the Asurion insurance, do I have any options? Can someone weigh in on the $50 replacement from Verizon?
Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

First let me you to the site! We're gald you found us.

As far as you issue goes. You only way out is to buy a replacement for full retail or "send it " to Motorola for repair. I have heard VZW could offer a $50 replacement if they had a refurb, but they are far and few between. This is exactly the reason I carry insurance on both of my Droids! I beliee full retail is $550. Sorry you are having this trouble though. I wish I could offer better options

Personally I invested in the insurance that Verizon offers because I'm a klutz and I like having the piece of mind that if anything happens to my phone on accident (Like jumping into the pool forgetting my LG Dare was in my pocket) I'll be covered and only have to pay the deductible.

Now, with that being said, if that's what the Verizon rep told you, that looks about how things are going to go. BUT, I'm not one to encourage or advocate lying, but per se if you were to find some manufacturer's defect with the phone, i.e. D-pad or something on the keyboard not functioning properly you just might have some dice and could exchange the phone. Be careful though, I'm not sure how well your Verizon store would be able to detect intentional tampering with the device, and if that happens they might void your warranty completely.

Hope this has helped out some. Also if they do exchange your handset for a new one, I would suggest getting the insurance asap!

One option would be to call verizon and add insurance (don't if they will let you or not, but worth a try) and wait it out for a couple weeks and then file a claim

If you didn't get the insurance you are SOL, Verizon can't be held responsible becasue YOU dropped it, since it's not a product flaw, this is all on you.

Maybe you should get the insurance next time.

One of the ads at the top of this forum said $139 touch screen repair, maybe look into getting it fixed.

I'm not advocating insurance fraud or lying, just giving him an option, if he chooses to take it, it's on him.

Not any help for ya.. but I havn't broken my Droid yet but called to add insurance to my Droid and Verizon said I was "3 days" past the 30 day mark to add insurance.. I had the extended warranty and ALWAYS carried insurance on my phones but this time via the web order I missed selecting the insurance and didn't notice it till my next bill... They had me call the insurance company directly (name escapes me currently) to see if they woudl waive the frickin 3 days.. but they said NO too. But what they did say that was interesting was that if my Droid was replaced under warranty for any reason, that I could then add insurance at that point. I would prefer insurance now for the piece of mind and don't exactly want a refurbed unit, but I'm keeping a close eye on my Droid's performance in case it requires a warranty replacement. So far it's been working ok, I have had two total lockups (black sreeen) when removing it from the dock and I had to pull the battery to fix.. and I have had three random reboots.. so we shall see.

This is the route I would take. I think it is more than a couple weeks wait time before it goes into effect and yes it is technically insurance fraud. So either come to terms with that or take up a second job.

Also you might want to get a friend's Droid if you do it in person, I have added insurance before and they like to inspect the phone. If you can do it over the phone that works too.
