It really is a bummer not having native Divx/Xvid support.
I recommended QuickMediaConverter before testing it myself and after my first attempt, I got a black screen in the video player. It was only one test of format settings, but I apologize in advance if it doesn't do the job. I have, however, successfully converted several shows/movies to mp4 (h264 codec) that play well on the Droid using Wondershare MP4 Video Converter, but didn't mention it since it's not free ($30).

$30 for an app to play video files!? that's ridiculous hoping that a fix is going to come out soon.
if i fail this semester... i'm blaming it on the droid.

weird, I don't know which did it. Video's were not coming up. Rebooted droid and also mounted the sd card with an adapter (not using droid) and added a second video. Now they show up. it also took awhile to process them

So looks like the gallery will not show up when the droid is mounted.

You can't read any files off the SD card while its mounted. MP4 format like the iPhone uses is prolly your best bet atm.

    Try this:

The best mp4 converter I've found is at DVDVideoSoft.com: Download free DVD, iPod, YouTube video converter and editor software and freeware

Download their full converter suite (one file for all programs) and it has an entire suite of free utilities (download and install on your computer, not on your Droid).

They have video/audio dubbing, YouTube to iPod and Video to iPod (converts to mp4), video to mp3, etc.

I've successfully converted avi, DivX, etc, to mp4.

Occasionally I've run into a file that says "CODEC NOT SUPPORTED". If you get this, convert using "vido to flash", then take the flash video (*.flv) and use the video to iPod and it should work now.

I have not tried to play any while docked, but it works great playing over the DROID.

To get to my mp4s, I created a directory in the SD card and access it through "FILES", "Phone files", then the directory I created for my mp4s.
