Download and set up everything from here: Android SDK | Android Developers
Then do the Hello World tutorial: Hello, World | Android Developers
Then before actually starting to make apps read the application fundamentals, if you understand it then you'll be way on your way :)

you're supposed to run it as an 'android application', if you configured your environment and installed the eclipse plugin correctly it should work.

Finally got off my duff and installed the SDK and I have to say, it's not anywhere near as daunting as I'd originally thought. In addition to that, I went ahead and ordered me a book off of Amazon that should be here tomorrow:
