Emulator issues

I'm trying to develop in Vista, which is probably my first mistake. I've downloaded the SDK, already have the Java, and Eclipse 3.5 (read somewhere that 3.6 was not entirely compatible). I've made the obligatory HelloWorld starter app, but simply cannot get it to show up on the emulator. The emulator is won't go past the flashing word "Android". Has anyone has any experience and luck with this? I'm debating a complete wipe of everything and starting over, but hoping not to resort to that.
