Once you have the SDK installed, start running through the tutorials:
    Hello, World | Android Developers
    Hello, Views | Android Developers
    Hello, L10N | Android Developers
    Notepad Tutorial | Android Developers

Then you'll have your feet wet and you can start looking through the sample applications:
    Sample Code | Android Developers

Also a good idea to bookmark the reference page as you'll probably be visiting it fairly often:
    Class Index | Android Developers

If you visit any of the links I posted there is an SDK tab on the top. That tab takes you here:
    Android SDK | Android Developers

Of note: that is the official google android developer portal. Pretty much everything that google has to help you write android apps is contained in those pages. It should be your go-to place.

IRC channels and mailing lists can be very helpful too. Don't be afraid to search through mailing list archives, they are a goldmine.

I just got the book Head First Java. It's really excellent.Good use of humor which can be good in a programming book. My friend is a professional software engineer and he highly recommends their books.

By the way, the book specifically says to use a simple text editor, not an IDE, to learn. Otherwise the IDE will correct mistakes and make suggestions.
