    I installed android wifi tether and it refers to a netfilter-enabled kernel I don't recall installing one but it connected the first try.

    That's a warning from the old 2.0 and 2.1 days. You had to have a custom kernel on a D1 to get WiFi tethering working. It's built into 2.2 because it was SUPPOSED to be a free feature on all Android phones.
