Smart action problems

Battery life is atrocious after ICS update. I use less than 2GB of data month, don't listen to music, and rarely stream video or check facebook during the day. After the ICS update, my battery was usually under 10% in less than 8 hours and sometimes within 4 hours.

I set up a Battery Extender rule that said whenever the screen was off and the unit was unplugged (not in dock or on a charger) it would turn off the data sync. The rule worked perfectly and my battery was typically at 50% after a days work and 10 hours off the charger. I did this for two weeks straight without a hitch.

Last week, I noticed my 4G icon was white. It stayed white and would not sync data. I cycled it into airplane mode and back, powered the phone off and on, pulled the battery, pulled the sim card, etc. Nothing I did would bring the data sync back. I finally deleted the Battery Extender rule in Smart Actions. It still didn't work. I force closed the program and VIOLA! My icon switched back to 4G blue and everything started syncing again.

I left it this way for a few days and the battery kept going dead too fast so I decided to try Smart Actions again. I set it up this morning. Two hours later I turned the phone on for a couple minutes and noticed the 4G icon was white and my phone was not updating email. I deleted the Smart Actions rule, force closed the program, and within 30 seconds my 4G icon was blue and the phone started sync'ing again.

Any thoughts on how to extend my battery life without this data sync problem?

unfortunately Motorola took forever to update this phone and many others and still don't get it right ... 60%+ need a master reset to function properly .. while other manufacturers update and work properly moto falls short... we can sit here and blame Google or Verizon but in the end its moto phones that always suffer so if nothing works id have to recommend a master reset... although I personally avoid them at all costs

The Droid was a serious pain the first few months I had it. Replaced sim cards, constant resets, toggling airplane mode and jumping through various other hoops just to get it to function correctly half the time. After about four months, it finally started working with very few problems and I was happy. Nine months later I get the ICS update and it has been worse than the first four months. Battery drains in 4-6 hours every day. Data drops. I answer calls and can't hear the other person. Apps freeze. The phone resets itself at least once a day and usually right when I'm trying to answer a call or get some information regarding work.

I know some people are happy with the Bionic but I am not. I've had it for 15 months and it still doesn't perform as well as it should of when I first bought it. I will take advantage of the Christmas sales and my upgrade eligibility and move to a manufacturer that strives for quality and customer satisfaction.

I finally broke down and tried the factory reset. It took a couple days to get all my programs back and there are still some that aren't running correctly. But the most bothersome thing is that the phone isn't acting any better. My phone has reset itself three times today. Once while I was using an app to read a news story and twice while it was sitting unattended.

When I first bought the Bionic, it lost the data signal constantly and took months before it was fixed. I'm sure they will fix these problems as well, but I'm not sure I want to stick around waiting for the solution.

Something is wrong with your phone, auto resets aren't supposed to happen!

You could call verizon tech support for help and/or contact motorola... sometimes their techs will assist eventhough they don't have to.
If it was my phone, I'd make sure my battery was fully charged, have my usb cable nearby, get the FXZ file for .246, download RSD lite 5.7, download latest motorola drivers and reinstall ICS!

If your not comfortable or knowledgeble with DIY smartphone techniques, take it to a Verizon store and get assistance from tech support.
