You longpress on the homescreen, just like any other widget.

For some reason, I can't get Astrid to display on pure calendar widget.

Pure cal currently works with a non-market alteration of astrid (there's a link to download/install it in the pure calendar settings area). The downside is, it may not update, although it works well.
