GPS Tracker for Child
Contemplating getting our teen ager a Droid, but I need a good GPS locator app that works similar to Verizon Family Locator, or Chaperone as they used to call it. I have played with Google Latitude on my Storm and my wife's Droid, but it eats up battery in half a day. Any recommendations to track our child's phone?

Haven't seen one.
Never used any of the tracking with my kids...

I may have just answered my own question, but please send any other ideas you have. I just noticed that Smrtguard has a beta version for Droid. I have been using Smrtguard on Blackberry, and it is a great app. it has the ability to track, remote lock or wipe. Its $45 a year, but well worth it. Thanks for any other ideas you may have.

These apps can be ended or closed too easy... I wouldn't recommend it just because of that alone.
Also, why would you would give a child a phone that has unfettered and uncontrolled access to the internet?
Just a note... Porn works really good on an Android phone...

Alright. I'm a 14 year old with a Droid. In the coming days/months I'll be developing an app that will run in the background and hide itself from task managers and etc. This will make it so that you can always track him/her no matter what. This app is going to be part of a security suite.
The thing about this app is that the GPS tracker is not running at all times, only when you need it to run.
There are a lot of issues that I have to overcome in this application, such as talking to the phone without SMS and etc.
I hope to make this app free, but I may have to charge money for it (running SMS and Web servers)

Check out an app called loopt. If you have a phone and he does that will tell where is is..as long as the app is running.

One thing I like about the Family Locator, is that alerts can be setup when my child moves to certain zones.
I hope that a similar app will be developed for the Droid!

gps tracker
I use an app called GPS Tracker by Instamapper. It runs in the background and you can set up how often you want it to locate the phone (1min, 5 min, ect). You log onto their website and you see a bread crumb trail every time it locates the phone, based on how often you set it. I do mine every 5 min and it doesn't effect the battery enough to do it any longer. I use it for work to see when I arrive and leave a job.
You can also do an instant locate (like Family Locate)(from web site) but a lot faster, and you could see which direction someone is heading.
THIS APP IS FREE. I remember paying $100 per employee 6 yrs ago to get this type of tracking and it sucked.
Have to check with the website to remind myself how much data it stores, but if memory serves me, at one locate every 5 min, it could store over 2 months of tracking. Unless someone knows how to shut down apps they couldn't do it. You have to go into program which is a black white generic screen and hit the back button...no exit button on the screen.
Has sat and map view.
Also a APP called Lookout. Serves as content scanner and has a locate feature from website, a scream the phone feature and a wipe feature. Locates my phone with in 5 feet of where i'm sitting in my home using map view.

You can get a app like Mobile Defense, Lookout or Wave Secure. All have ways to show where a phone is. Those are all on the web for searching, though.
There's also iGuard Mobile. While I've never used it, I understand that you can set up a "fence" so that the Droid will send a message if it crosses the line.

not to be an ass or tell you how to parent
but i suggest talking normally with your kid instead of tracking them like a pet. trust. but there are a few apps on the market that include the phones latitude and longitude with a text they send or try the anti-theft apps that allow you to locate the phone using their client online
