Car charger damage?

I bought a third-party car charger for my Droid today, and used it on and off. I noticed that the tip of the charging cord was growing quite hot, and I did some research and found out that the voltage of the car charger was too high for the Droid (6.1V).

I understand that using a charger with too much voltage has the potential to damage my Droid; how do I tell whether such damage has occured? Thanks.
