    Which safe strap to install?

Ok so i feel like a complete dumbass having to ask this but....which version of safe strap do I have to download? I have a bone stock, fresh out the box droid 4. I rooted it right away, tried downloading safe strap and neither of the versions worked. The "non-ics" version installed correctly, but does not give me the option to go into recovery mode upon restart. And the ICS version installed correctly , but when I restart it it gets real choppy and laggy when i try to go into recovery mode...it usually just laggs so bad it lets the 10 second timer run down and it just boots without letting me enable safe system... am i doing something pathetically obviously wrong or its something else lol?

You'll need the version not designed for the ICS leaks, which I assume you're not on if you just unboxed your Droid 4. This is Safestrap v1.09 NOT 2.0

Make sure you have the most up to date su binary (can be updated through the superuser app) and the latest version of busy box installed (can be installed through a free app via Play Market). Make sure not only that you've installed the Safestrap app, but allowed it super user permission and clicked the button to install the recovery.

Upon the safestrap boot screen you'll need to press the menu soft key within ten seconds to activate the recovery menu.

    Goodluck and happy flashing.

I've seen so many faults and failures with safestrap that I would recommend avoiding it altogether. Stick with tried and true Bootstrap.

Highly don't recommend that. Safestrap is all around a safer and better custom recovery that is well worth taking the time to figure out.

Thanks guys! Downloading busy box solved the issue. Safe strap is up and running . Now whats a fairly stable ROM to use? I had a Bionic before this and I wasn't into the nightly builds, neither the CM9 nor the other nightly builds were stable enough for my liking. I had Eclipse 3.0 for a while and I liked that the most, is there a version of Eclipse for Droid 4? Oh and as for bootstrap , I guess thats a personal preference. I'm not confident enough in my rooting skills and what not so I prefer to have a safe system and mess with that so I don't brick my phone. With bootstrap I bricked my phone quite a few times , due to my own mistakes lol.

I respect your opinion, so can you help me, so I can help others? I have seen numerous failures of Safestrap that have left people soft-bricked and caused them to lose entire roms. Would you you be able to lay out a step by step of what to do, and perhaps include separately what may be the reasons why people are soft-bricking?

I had also tried to use Safestrap myself and was unable to get it to work properly for me as well, forcing me to Fastboot back into Gingerbread at the time. Once I had that much difficulty, I gave up.

I can point to many threads with such failures, some worse than others. I do believe that the concept of a dual-boot, or "Safe" ROM to fall back on is a good idea and if it will definitely work with no risk of soft boot, I would be happy to recommend.

    Thanks.

Just a cursory search provided the results below, there are many others but this is a very superficial scan.

There is literally only one difference between Safestrap and your regular bootstrap, and that is safestrap essentially has a dual-boot feature requiring you to keep a working "safe system" that you can fall back to when your "non-safe" system is inoperable. That feature alone is unlikely to soft brick a phone granted the individual knows what they are doing. The other 98% of safestrap works just like any other bootstrap, so any user error resulting in a brick is not safestrap specific. A user can screw up any custom recovery.

I was intimidated at first when I began using it on my Droid 3, but personally I have found safestrap to be enormously more helpful than your average bootstrap. Hashcode himself stated the reason he developed this is so that he could "develop and code until he was blue in the face at 3 a.m. and still be able to switch back to a fully functioning phone in time for work."

Don't let user errors not specific to Safestraps safety features spoil it for you. If you know what you're doing then there's no reason safestrap is any worse than clockworkmod recovery.

There is an Eclipse for your Droid 4 running GB found here:
    (GB) Eclipse1.3 for d4

There are a few more GB roms and several ICS based roms for GB devices. However, if you choose to install an ICS leak and upgrade your kernel, you'll never be able to go back to GB so you'll have to find ICS-Leak specific roms. Development will likely increase once this ICS business becomes official.

OK, great information. Also, one of the other Mods, Guidot saw my response and referred me to his Safestrap Guide for RAZR. So it seems what I was asking of you had already been prepared previously. Thanks for the advice. Now I may be willing to take the plunge on the wife's phone and see how it works! If I screw her phone up, I can Fastboot back and there's not much that will need to be reinstalled. If I did it on mine, I would have a day's worth of reinstall and setup.

Awesome! I just installed Eclipse 1.3 , its almost identical to 3.0 on bionic. Also, what do you mean "never" be able to go back to stock kernel? Even if I factory rest and reflash with RSD Lite?? Thats wild lol.
