Is this normal?
Hey everyone. New member here with my first post.
I received my DROID 4 yesterday new & shiny right out of the box. I've never owned a DROID before and I am new to verizon. That being said, I have no idea if the issue I'm about to share is normal or not.
My phone is awesome and works like a dream....until I plug in the charger. While my phone is charging, I am not able to use it at all. I can't even unlock it. I can hear my notifications but the phone is completely unresponsive. Then when I unplug it, voila, perfect functionality! Is this irregular or something I am just going to have to accept? It's awfully inconvenient!
Unfortunately I think this is a known issue. I remember having this happen when I was on stock. I just tested and this is not an issue on AOKP Skyline. Not sure about Eclipse. So if you want to flash a custom ROM that may fix your issue.
Droid 4 - AOKP Skyline
i dont think it to be a known issue, ive tested on my non-safe side and found myself able to use my phone while its charging, if you did the update from gb>ics then i would recommend a full factory reset just to see if that resolves it, if not take it back to vzw
Ashley, there is a known issue with these phones (as kwyrt mentioned), where some third-party chargers that are not the ones issued with the phone can cause the screen to act erratically, making it difficult to click in the right places of the screen, and in some cases causing it to appear as though someone else has taken over the screen and clicking or scrolling randomly. I have several non-Motorola chargers and my RAZR MAXX does this with virtually all of them, however the stock charger allows me complete control of my phone. This is not what it seems that you have described. In your case, it seems the screen is completely unresponsive while attached to the charger and I would tend to agree with outsid0r, in that even with the phone connected to the STOCK charger, the phone should work virtually the same as it does on battery power.
If plugging in and removing the plug from the stock Motorola charger and stock Motorola cable causes an instant reversal of the effects, I am leaning toward a faulty charger, though it could also be a failure of a board component on the phone. Either way, I'd take both the phone and charger to a local Verizon Phone Center Store, demonstrate this to a store technician and then ask them to try the same charger on another phone, and also to try a stock charger they have there with yours to isolate which device is failing.
Make sure you get this resolved within 14 days of your phone's purchase, since if the phone is faulty you will be provided a brand new replacement within those 14 days, whereas after 14 days it will be replaced with a Certified Like New Replacement device (CLNR), and you may be inheriting someone else's yet undetected problems.
Good luck and please report back with your findings.
Ive always had this problem with El Chepo chargers, and plugging just the usb cable into a chepo power outlet to USB dongle or a bad outlet, Samsung, LG, Blackberry and kindle AC chargers work perfectly!

It is with great pleasure that I announce the issue is no more :)
I use my charger that came with the D4 while at home, but at work I use a charger I bought for my Blackberry (that happens to fit my D4).
Well, as with other things in life, just because it "fits" doesn't mean it should be used.
Apparently, that was the issue all along. So, thank you for helping me!! I appreciate the advice.
Now, if you'll excuse me...I am on my way to Verizon to buy a charger! ;)
