Poor service coverage with the D3?

Hi folks. I've been using my new D3 for a couple of days, and I enjoy it. However, I'm a bit disappointed in the service coverage. Where my old phone(an EnV3) would have full bars in several different places, the D3 MIGHT have 1 bar. Anyone else experience this?

I have a few different phones: the Droid 3 (Motorola), an HTC, an LG and an Apple (the latter three are prepaids). The LG has one bar consistently (and a signal that hovers around ~99 dBm, even after updating the PRL through the QPST program). The other phones are much less consistent. Bars change often throughout the course of the day and the signal strength fluctuates just the same (the Droid's is always pretty good, though).

In my experience, it's a common issue. It should be noted that I've never experienced a dropped call with any of these phones.

Dial *22899 and wait for it to hang up. Repeat monthly. Also:

settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > system select > automatic
    Do you like uninstallable bloatware?
It takes about 5 minutes to complain and it's kinda fun. Let's not be complacent!

Bars really mean nothing when you comare one phone to another - there is no standard way to display bars, so the same signal that shows four bars on one phone may show one or two bars on another. Bars are a decent indication from time to time how reliable a connection you may expect to get. If you are moving (say, you are in a car) and the signal indicator drops from 4 bars to 1 bar, that's a decent indication that the call you are now on may start having issues, or you may have issues making calls (though not necessarily.)

Take a look at your actual signal strength, not the bars. Bars on cell phones are akin to the stock gauges in your car's dashboard. They give you a vague indication of what is going on but nothing really accurate.
