skype w/ video now WORKING

i know a few of us have been following xda forums for the hacked skype app that works on SOME phones. well now the dev has it working on the droid 3.

I am new to Android, how do I install this on my phone. I would like to get Skype to work at least to see if it is better than Tango. That seemed to work for me phone to phone.

I downloaded the apk file and tried to install it, but it exits with "App not installed." Any ideas? I tried it with Skype off, then again with it logged in.

I also noticed in the applications that I have Skype and Skype Mobile. I've never used the Skype Mobile app.

I recommend uninstalling your current Skype app before using this. Tried it out last night on two Droid 3's, and they both worked pretty well.

You need to first go to Settings, Applications and enable Unknown sources. Then plug your phone into your computer, copy the apk file to internal memory or the microSD card. Once ejected from your USB port navigate to where you put the apk file using the Files app. Open the apk file and install. Its pretty simple after you do it a few times.

Yep, that was the problem. I found the "uninstall existing Skype" notation afterwards. Thanks for the help.

Ah nice! They need to update the real app faster.. phones with front facing camera's shouldn't have to use the back camera to skype! Lol, but I'm sure it may be harder to update for a lot of phones then I think.

How can you 'uninstall' the original Skype??? It came installed on the Droid 3!

There are two different versions of Skype, the one that comes shipped with the phone is called Skype Mobile, and is a limited ability version. The version that you should remove and the new one replaces is simply called Skype and was originally installed via the Market. If you don't have that version, then you don't need to uninstall.

I installed this on the 2 D3's in the house, and it works great over Wifi, I haven't tried 3g yet, but would expect the quality to be a bit worse. It worked great from phone to phone, and phone to PC.
