I grabbed a D3 in the Bay Area of California and tried this hack. It worked flawlessly though I wasn't able to test it for more than a few minutes at a time. That phone was defective, though, and I swapped it for a new one. I had to wait until I was back home in Hawaii to try this on it...

No go. It did the 3G on/off thing when a device was connected to it. I double checked the changes, switched from Global to CDMA and back, and generally poked at it but nothing worked.

I got adventurous and did a factory reset. That did the trick. It did NOT overwrite these changes and the hotspot worked for 15 or 20 minutes before the data connection was dropped. I only tried it once as I was out and needed to get home: no cell service here at the house.

But... 15 minutes is enough for me. I only use it for emergency tablet access when on the road - which isn't that often.

Does anyone get flawless, unlimited hotspot action out of this? I'm really curious what the variables are.

I had a few theories to the cause of this issue.
    1) heat. Phones get hot from using data constantly. Radio reaches a temperature that the phone recognizes that then shuts it off. Thus the constant drops after 10 or 20 min.

    2) the tethering program itself is flawed. (My hopes is that this is a problem for users who pay as well, maybe the next update will fix this problem)

    3) what was mentioned before that its an authorization problem.

    4) as far as networking I don't see that as the issue. Im in VA and this just doesn't, ake sense.

I do recommend waiting for root. It seems to be the only thing that can ever truely utilize the capacities of our little friends.

Though as impatient as I am for something like this. Considering I have no internet available where I live. And paying 30 monies for 2 worthless gigs seems like a great way for verizon to afford their 4g tower upgrades, I assume when they ready those services they would do most of it all at once.

Id rule out that its heat or that its the app itself. Those dont add up here. Im sure motorola takes heat into account when building the phone, esp when this is an intended use.

I mean you pull off a mod and it breaks it, seems pretty clean cut that it was the mod.

I didnt say networking was the issue, more the network configuration. As in how they are set up to handle authentication. Alot of times when companies aquire other companies and their equipment they cant always have a "Standardized" setup, due to different hardware and software in use. Im thinking thats why were seeing the variations in how quickly the 3g drops. Im also thinking maybe the hot spot app has some other means of authentication or something to trip a red flag when you pull this lil reach around trick.

Its just odd, I'm in alabama, if verizon knows how to block it, it seems odd they'd do it in bama, and not in bigger states, cause well you know bama ain't exactly known for its hackers

Im sure that the mod itself (if done correctly) is in no way harmful to the phone. I think its more of a conflict within the phone itself. Multiple ports have the same number to direct.
So when we're tethering I assume we are using two ports. On for data to and from phone to the tower. And one of the other ports for the 'other' device. If both are using the same auth code. Then eventually everything gets backed up eventually and it just cuts off.
Though I am going to just put everything back to normal. Im not using it anyway.
Besides. This ones getting sent back. Sometimes when I type a key will seem stuck and just jjjjjjjjjjj < do something like that) as well as act strange when I have it plugged into the charger. Green blocky screens n stuff like that.
My wifes phone does the green screen alot too. And I only used the mod on mine.

Ok so, i changed my numbers back to default and it still does the same thing,

when a device is connected, the 3g goes off/on then off/on every few seconds.

So i think i may have a defective chip or something, i'm gonna backup wipe and try again.
