If I had to guess on that one I would say that your computer has the drivers installed and sees the phone as a storage device and or thinks it is trying to establish an adb connection, and adb bypasses the bootup once again I may be wrong

That could be right, though nothing shows up on the PC, RSD doesn't list the device and also I tried plugging the phone in an USB hub that's not connected to the PC, and it does lit there too, which I find weird. Perhaps I should persuade into buying a new battery, unless someone suggests otherwise.
