Was wondering if someone could help clarify some things in general, as this looks like the start to a great theme thread.

First, the CM nightlies have the themechanger. CM7 v1 has three themes native. I am not seeing these on the sd card. Not even sure that this is where there are stored. As to adding some of the themes linked in this thread, I have downloaded the Honeybread theme. It is an apk. So I am wondering if this is treated as a usual apk install, and if so will then become part of the theme chooser application once it is installed?

Thanks for the links and the help.

    Craig

Edit: I should add that this appears to be the instructions from the XDA link, but just wanted to doublecheck.

That's exactly how they're installed. Just install as a typical .apk and they will take their place in the Theme Chooser app. One thing I have noticed with a couple of the themes, a reboot will "un-theme" (for lack of a better word) a bunch of stuff so the themes will need to be re-applied. It doesn't seem consistent though, it's very odd behavior.

As far as where they're stored...since they're built in I imagine they are in system/app but I haven't checked to verify.

Auto, Thanks. I will give it a go. I did look in system for the 3, but only saw the one apk. Perhaps they are rolled up in that one.

So then I guess the ultimate goal is for the CM compatible themes to be released to the market, where they are then installed into /data, and are available to the native theme changer. Pretty slick, and certainly beats the Metamorph methodology whereby you have to either restore a prethemed backup, or hope the morph comes with a "back to stock".

    Thanks again,

    Craig

    craig,

in /system/app there are 2 themes

    Androidian.apk
    and
    Cyanbread.apk

the third one that shows up in theme manager, as System, is just basic gingerbread so it probably isn't an actual .apk, just a lack of any theme.

Also, check out "Rover" over at XDA. It just popped up for theme chooser recently to my knowledge and it's very cool.

BearNM, to my understanding, It is only an apk install for now. I do know that they are slowly integrating these into the market. Once it's updated you get a market notification tell you to update it. Then you reapply the theme through TM again.

My goal was to stir up the theme manager and get some of our awesome themers on board with this.

I would love to have an actual theme dev take over this tread and run with it.
I do NOT mind if it gets replaced with a Better CM7 Theme Manager Thread.

    Ill,

Thanks again for the details. I did add the HoneyBread to test, and it is working perfectly. As to your goal for the Dev's, we already are doing pretty well considering we do not have a RC yet. Not that the rc is magical for us as users, but historically themers have been hesitent to get on board with roms that are not "stable" and more fixed in time. Using the apk method certainly will give us more options as end users, and perhaps encourage more themers to try the market approach, where hopefully they can reap some monitary reward.

And perhaps the market approach will reduce some of the kanging, as I know that themes that get forum released are pretty much "open season" for all users. Heck, even I can edit graphic files. That has to discourage themers to a large extent, once they get past the rewards of seeing their work loved by users and become kanged by every person with a photo editor program and the gall to ask for donations.

I agree, we have done pretty good considering CM7 for D1 hasn't been released yet. I really like the concept of market upgrades for the themes too. So far there has been updates to YelloBread CM7 theme. There's a donate vers for $0.68 or the free. They both received updates in the last week.

As far as Kanging is concerned, I believe that the biggest form of flattery is to be imitated. If it wasn't for it, we would have never seen a ReMix by J-Rummy and or a Kernel by Slayer and so forth and so on.

But credit should definitely be given each and every time. It will just tarnish your work if it is not addressed in the OP.

    Ill,

I agree. The kanging usually starts with a themer being excited about sharing. Then evolves to "please do not link or mirror" so the dev. can maintain the releases. Many times with elaborate websites to manage some control and perhaps gain fees. Then things fall apart. Many times I think it just "poor" expectations by the original developer about open source, and just what folks will do. Dunno, I just know a lot of folks move on. Perhaps it is just too easy to take the ungodly number of hours it takes to theme everything, and see your theme with one or two changes posted as a new theme. Sometimes credit, often not. Perhaps as I said, the market and apk route will help a bunch. Granted it is not impossible to pooch apk contents, it is just a tad harder then modding a morph or zip file. A small tad
