Can't read text while on a phone call

I noticed that when I'm talking on the phone I cannot read/send text messages or e-mails. I could swear that before I rooted (last week SS4.8) that I was able to do just about anything while on a phone call. Now I can't even pull down the notification bar. Is this normal now that my phone is rooted?

hit the home button then u can do whatever you want as long as it isn't with the internet (unless your on wifi)
