    Tethering getting nerfed?

Chevy just wanted to point out that tethering with 2.2 in the new froyo build is no longer free according to droid life. Thought id point that out.

It seems to catch everyone by surprise. If Chevy's built-from-source 4.3 ROM is using the FRF84b code for it, it'll be a problem. If not, users will be fine... or they can use this to tether "off the clock" anyway.

Does it really show up any different than the wireless tether from market? Thats what Ive been trying to figure out. The wireless from market still works, but is VZW gonna catch and kill me for it?

My BB v0.4 is working and doesn't seem to be any different than prior ROMs I've tried....working just fine.

I did notice that in the settings, there's an option to USB tether... would that be an option easier than PDAnet? Like built in already?

I'm sure Pete turned it off, but that's the option that everyone's getting their panties in a twist over.

As for showing up differently, it's not reporting home to mommy that your phone's doing bad, bad things. Using the stock (included) option will.

I wouldn't be surprised if they could track it via the internal app - but why am I (and others) not getting the redirect to the page, as Droid Life mentions?

Running bb .4 I tried using the built in tethering. I got redirect telling me about the good deal $25/month is for the service. Tried the USB tether app. Worked fine.

WiFi tethering works just fine. Use the app, not the built-in networking option.

    1. I selected the WiFi-Tether app and "Start Tethering"
(If first time, allow superuser privileges.)

    2. On laptop (ubuntu 10.04) went to wireless networks and selected the droid.

    3. Droid buzzed that a client was connected.

    4. Reloaded this page to see if I'd get a redirect. I DID NOT.

Works for me like it should.

EDIT: Looks like the forum converts simple domain names like " www . droidforums . net " (without spaces) into the link you see above. Disregard. It's a forum artifact.

My guess would be it's something built into the stock app, so it should only be a problem in FRF84b and its immediate derivatives, unless it's something in the source code... but if some people (read, built-from-source and FRF57-derived ROM users) aren't having the problem, I'm guessing it's a Verizon "value-add" thing.

Value for them, not for us, of course.

I'd think someone building a ROM from source would have noticed it during the build too, and hopefully disabled it, if it was hard-coded in and not a Verizon exclusive feature.

Of course, those who WiFi tether exclusively are (currently) unaffected since that's using an app (and I use that wired app because it was more convenient, AND offered far greater control, for me). The people who want to tether this way are all rooted anyway, and Verizon has no way to monitor that other than on a case-by-case basis except by straight data usage. Those of us that root should always be able to find a workaround for pretty much any problem, but my guess is since the majority of Droid users aren't rooted this is a ploy to capture that market. However, why would anyone pay $25 per month to use it when you can pay $10 once for EasyTether, readily available from the market, and be done with it? That's what I don't get... It's not that hard to install a program on a computer, and if you're on Windows XP you have to install a bloody driver from the web if you're using the built-in app anyway.

Unless Verizon pushes out another update that includes a built-in WiFi tethering app (a la Palm Pre) to try to boost sales once the X comes out, I think we're covered using whatever rooted apps we currently enjoy.
