Cheek Dialing (Or: Why does my phone hang up while I'm using it?)

I upgraded to BB Froyo v0.4 and since then I've been having a lot of dropped calls.

I've noticed two things before the call drops, either the phone gives me haptic feedback (vibrating slightly) or the screen lights up. Usually both.

What I think is going on is that the phone thinks I've taken it away from my head and activates the touch screen. Then my cheek presses the hang-up button and ends the call.

I have never had this problem on stock or BB Eclair v0.7 thru v1.1.

Anybody know how to fix this?

Also, is there a way to confirm that I'm hanging up and not just getting a dropped call?

It's probably a proximity sensor issue — if the screen lights up, that's an issue with the proximity sensor. The phone should never light up or respond to input during a call unless it detects that it has been removed from your ear.

Try calling your voicemail and hold your phone in front of you and experiment with putting your hand in front of the handset speaker to determine if it is the proximity sensor. If it consistently lights up when you move your hand away from the handset speaker and shuts the display off when you put it close again, then it might just be that you're not holding the speaker consistently securely against your ear during a call, which would allow your face to hang up your calls or other such things. Also, I've heard that hair covering your ear can mess it up, too. I used to have medium-length "emo" hair that covered my ears and I can attest to that fact. So if you have longer hair, put the phone under your hair.
    THUNDERBOLT.

It is not really a problem with the proximity sensor. It's a bug in Froyo, already discussed ad nauseum.

The accelerometer for some odd reason overrides the proximity sensor while in a call and turns the screen on if you tilt your head (and the phone with it) a certain amount.

Did you just tell me "don't hold it that way"?

Seriously though, it worked fine before upgrading to v0.4, so I'm pretty sure its software.

Sweet, thanks for the good info Zerobarrier. I tried looking for a discussion of this before I posted, and again after you gave me that tip, but wasn't able to find anything. Could you point me in the direction of one of those threads, or improve my search terms?
