Moving from a 2.1 BB ROM to the new 2.2 BB ROM?

Bear with me, as I've never moved from one custom ROM to another. I am currently running a 2.1 BB ROM and would like to move to the new 2.2 version.

First off, do I need to load 2.2 before moving to the new ROM or will that happen automatically when I install the new ROM?

Secondly, will I lose my data (text messages, call log, etc..) when I move to the new ROM or will it be retained?

I tried searching for these answers and couldn't seem to come up with the right combination of search terms to find the answers.

When you install BB0.4 you are installing 2.2.

Yes, you will have to wipe your data. You can backup your apps using Titanium Backup, and you can backup your texts using one of the many apps from the market. I personally use "SMS Backup & Restore." You will then be able to restore them to your new ROM using these backups.
