I had been running a stock phone from March until last weekend. SuperOneClick did it all for me and my D1 was rooted again. As for which methods are preferred...all I know is that one worked for me. It was much much faster than how I rooted in Jan of 2010. Good luck.

If you apply a rom or theme - backup first!
If you don't know how to backup...Stop until you do.
hint: I name my backups like this: sg6.0_20100428 or ss4.2_20100626 to easily find them later. rom and date.

Thanks. Super On Click 1.9.1 worked great.
Note - was resizing super one click window during procedure - process froze. Simply reclicked Root - without - touching - anything!!!!!

Check XDA site for updates
Remember: Settings/ Application / Development / turn on USB Debugging
Remember: unmount SD Card - pwerd down / removed SD Card / booted back up / Connect USB / Run Super One Clik / did root procedure
Remember: reinstall SD Card!!
Nandroid Backup - after install of Clockworkmod / Astro File Manager reinstall apps not freshly downloaded from Mkt.
