Rooting the droid...So many problems...so few answers.

When I first rooted my droid, i did a search about 'How to root the motorola droid'.....led me to alldroid.org. I followed the directions to a tee, and never had an issue.

The first ROM I installed was UD 8.6.3. Loved it. went to 9.0.....Loved it more.. I decided to try other ROM's like Simply Stunning, Bugless Beast..et al... I unded up back at Ud 9.0, was my favorite.

now.... after searching MANY threads, I wanted to customize my phone...so after changing between boot animations, live wallpapers, themes, different kernels for overclocking, etc...I ended up having a **MAJOR** problem. Probably due to something installing incorrectly or a conflicting app or whatever.....

Evertime I changed something, I did an advanded nandroid backup and a factory wipe and cache wipe (in SPRecovery).. which was a pain in the ass because I would have to re-sync my gmail/contacts/calander, re-install my apps. *** I ended up backing my apps up with "mybackup pro" and re-installing afterwards, which was easier.***

The problem I ended up having was that I could no longer see ANY kinda of video in the web. YouTube, porn, or NOTHING. would say "video cannot be played".... Now, i watch videos on the web daily off of my phone, so it was a HUGE issue since I couldnt do it anymore. I seemed to be able to do anything else with the phone I wanted (except maybe my qwest email which hasnt worked since I originally got my phone) . Everytime I saw a problem someone was having with their droid, I tried to duplicate it and seemed not to have the same problem....but like I said, I was doing a backup and wipe before I changed something.

After posting my problem, and trying what other users recommended ...to no avail... I ended up unrooting and installing the verizon OTA 2.1...guess what......NO VIDEO !!! So I went to the verizon store.. they were clueless...they put me on with tech support.... Everything tech support had me try did not help. So Tech support recommeded that the store replace my phone (possible hardware problem... YA RIGHT!)

when I got home, I planned on re-rooting the phone, but I
wanted to make sure I did it properly (been a long time since I did it in the first place)....but I coulnt find the original thread .. I ran across this link....
Video Guides - Rooting, Nandroid backup, Unrooting, Cust ROM

This was the most helpful and user friendly way I have found to root my Droid. All the necessary files to download are linked below each video (some directions are a little different concerning the SPRecovery install, but anyone who can read and pay attention can do it since the choices are slightly different). I suggest watching the video several times before you do it!!!

once it came to installing a custom rom, I picked UD 9.8 update.zip nextheme (OF COURSE!!!!). and still followed the directions on the video.

I did change my boot animation with adb push.. (had to search the forums for this)

I changed kernel (wanted the low voltage kernel insted of the medium voltage......update.zip).

    installed a live wallpaper (update.zip)

updated the baseband ( I had to do a search in the forums for the new 3P one...update.zip)..

Before I did any of these things I made a nandroid back up in SPRecovery.

I did a factory wipe (after the back up) when I changed kernels and baseband...

I did one thing at a time... backup, wipe, install (update.zip), reboot.

when I installed the new live wallpaper I didnt wipe the phone, and everything seems to work properly...EVEN VIDEO!!! YEAH!!!

Now all I can say as far as my problems go, ALWAYS DO A BACKUP!!

Pay attention on what you are doing!!! NEVER get in a hurry to install ANYTHING because you cant wait to see the new stuff.

if you update something major to the operating system (new ROM, kernel, baseband...etc), WIPE THE PHONE!...those who have read the many threads that I have, know what this means....

I dont know what actually happened to me, probably not following a simple direction fully or properly, or got in a hurry and forgot to wipe the phone when I should have.... who knows... but from now on, I think I have learned to be more patient...

I want to thank EVERYONE on here for your help and support....and ESPECIALLY ........Blackdroid and the team for all their hard work!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. here's a like to a video on how to put Halo 3 on their Ipod, or psp, nintendo DS...enjoy....

I just flashed back to 2.0.1 tonight so I could nandroid backup the stock root. I just started doing this root stuff a few days ago, and now that I have bceome more knowledgeable, I realize all the stuff that I should have done in the first place, lol. I backed up all my apps with Astro, so when I restored back to my last nandroid backup, everything was just as I left it prior to flashing back to factory default. Apps, Contacts, Shortcuts on desktop, everything. Fun times.

You know you are tempted to scan my QR Code. Just do it.

as a matter of fact, i tried the 2.0.1 stock nandroid backup i found off the net, it unrooted, but didnt solve my problem. I did the factory reset in the setting menu.. same problem.

i then acquired rsdlite and tried it that way. still was having the same problem.. Dont know how garbled the phone got, where a stock reset from either of these didnt help.
