Update.zip vs Nandroid backup.. whats the dif

I see you can download update.zio or nandriod for 9.8

I have 9.0 installed. If I want the freshed best install of 9.8 what do i do?

why does BD provide both nandroid and update?

Also how are themes also "update.zip"

Does this mean you have to format your device everytime you change a theme? and put it in the root SD card and update it from SPrecovery?

Well, update.zips will work on both SPRecovery and Clockwork recovery. If you want the freshest install of 9.8 I suggest wiping data and and cache and installing the nandroid backup. A nandroid backup can contain the data partition also. But update.zips can only contain the system, recovery, and boot partitions

But generally, if you are already on a specific ROM, you would wanna use the update.zip, it's like how Verizon sends OTA updates. They send out an update.zip that downloads to your sdcard and automatically applies for you.

If you are on another ROM, say Smoked Glass or CyanogenMod, and you wanna try out UD 9.8, you would use the nandroid backup

Basically any update.zip you aply allows you to keep your data without issues, its the wayverizon releases updates the phones os. Usually when updrading to a newer version of the same rom the update.zip is the way to go, especially if the roms developer gives you that option.

Lol of course you can't when the dev doesn't give you the option.

If you have ROM Manger you can just easily flash SPRecovery from there. I believe it's included in the free version. Not positive, but for free, you can find out. It's easy peazy, though.

You can but you need CW to recover. SPRecovery and ClockWork do not have compatible nandroid functionality. Which ever one you use to do the backup, you need that same one to do the recovery.
