I actually did brick my phone using it. And Verizon could not fix it. Try this first...
If you already uninstalled rom manager...
Or ROM Manager not working...
Download this file... http://downloads.droidmod.org/recovery-0.99.3.img
Copy this to the root of your sd card
Open a terminal app (many freely available on market)
Type 'su' and hit enter
type 'flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-0.99.3.img' and hit enter
type 'reboot recovery' and hit enter
And it should show that you have rebooted into SPRecovery
(use power button for back
use vol up/down for up and down on list
use camera button for select)
Then choose backup/restore
choose advanced nandroid backup
select all
choose perform backup.
Use power button to go back to main menu
select reboot.
You now have a current backup using SPRecovery and are ready for the 9.8 release.
Yay!

No problem. If any of the steps don't work, just ask. I'm here until at least the 9.8 update! I'm sure longer.
I'll at least try to answer any question you may have about the steps I listed.
That's all from memory so if a step doesn't seem to go right, I can check it out for ya.
Hope this works for ya.

After typing the first part and hitting enter I get an error opening no such file or directory...ect. Using better terminal emulator pro
Edit: Just a note though..browsing though the mess with ASTRO i noticed a file named recovery-0.99.2b just sitting there..it wasn't in any folder. Is this what im looking for maby?

What exaxtly did you type? Did you already copy the file to your sdcard and unmount it from the computer before you ran the terminal emulator?

Yes you can use that one or the 99.3 should work. (0.99.3.img is what you downloaded from the link) But if you can't find it, you can type...
flash_image recovery /sdcard/(folder where you found the file)/recovery-0.99.2b.img
But it should work with the file you downloaded from the link. And the file should be viewable by ASTRO. (and should reside in the sdcard folder)

Ok it seems it didn't copy over even though I dragged and dropped it..now its there. However now im having the issue after typing su and hitting enter, it tells me flash_image recove denied BEFORE im even done typing the word recovery. Its like cutting me off
EDIT: It seems every app is currently very unstable cuz of what a mess my pone is. I successfully typed flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-0.99.3.img only to get
error writing recovery: Permission denied

If it's the first time you've used the terminal app, using the su command will bring up a pop-up box that asks for permission. Just check the box that says remember, and tell it to allow.
Then you should be able to continue without a problem.

Yeah I don't get any popup box. Only a strange box that flashes the word BTEP and then im told Permission denied.

Try getting 'Android Terminal Emulator' by Jack Palevich from the market. It's free, it's what I use. I'm wondering if it's the terminal app?
