I installed 2.1 gallery last night - and was initially very impressed with all the swooping pictures and other nice GUI features (including the way the way the app randomly selects a blurred photo as a nice jazzy background image; and that the streams of photos try to keep their orientation as you tilt the phone). However, it does not seem to cache or thumbnail the pictures as it takes around 3-5 min for them all to load every time I open the app (I have around 1600 photos in 30 folders) - which if you are just trying to show someone a single picture - kind of puts a damper on things!!
Also - although visually stunning - the size of all of those "heaped" photos means that you have to do an awful lot of scrolling to find the folder that you want.
So for just ease of use and being able to quickly locate a specific photo, I have gone back to using IMT.
Yes, it still FC's on my occasionally and there are a number of other improvements I would like to see that have already been mentioned (including a better name that at least makes me think of "photo viewer" - how about "Image MT"? - and a more eye catching icon) it still does its job admirably.

Wow, that gallery has some nice features. I like the kinetic feel of it. We prototyped some accelerometer features as well, but haven't got them fit for release yet.
Whoever wrote this has a knack for UI's. But, the caching of image data can be a good challenge, and I see they haven't gotten that one down yet.
We agree about the name of IMT. Care to take a vote?
Here is a list of suggestions with the votes next to them. To vote, copy this section and either increase the number of your voted name by one, or add a new one at the bottom:

I like Imagine Viewer best out of this list.

* Imagine Viewer 1
* Image World 1

Oh, and just a suggestion, one perhaps you've gotten before. It would be nice to be able to scroll pictures with the D-pad.

Not really thrilled about any of them but I am not very imaginative today so I am going with Image MT.
* Image MT 2
* Image Guru 0
* Imagine Viewer 1
* Image World 1

Ok, I just invested my $0.99 on this app TRUSTING that it will become the #1 gallery viewer that the world has ever known!! If I come up with anything revolutionary I'll make sure to put in my 2 cents.
Good luck (for my sake) :P

First of all, tried gallery 2.1. Is there a point to the pictures tilting when u tilt the phone or just a cool effect? haha
Secondly, I know im joining this thread WAY LATE and these questions were already addressed BUT...
- The visual layout in landscape and portrait are completely different?
- Is there a way to get to your pictures without having to jump through so many hoops? Once I open IMT, I have to go from dcim->camera->thumbnail just to view the picture. Aswell as going from handcent->downloads->thumbnail. Is there a way to just show the immediate containing folder like gallery 2.1?
- Can you add a function where you make a spiral motion with ur finger to rotate the picture?
Ill have PLENTY more where that come from haha. Thanks.

Just curious if you guys are still working on Imagine Multi-touch? I donated but was expecting to see more frequent updates.
Right now I am using the ported gallery from the milestone on my droid, which is about the same as the most recent version of Imagine MT or whatever you are calling it now, but a bit more polished. Still hoping that you are still developing and are going to come out with some of the requested features - passworded folders, rotate & crop, send.. etc hopefully with gestures for most actions.

Yes, we're still working hard!
For the next release, we're adding all the usual stuff that people have told us we should have started as: Set As Wallpaper, Send, crop/rotate, etc. We're also working on more polish, performance and more preferences (background color, border colors, etc.).
