I was looking for a simple app that places an option to read a message. Found some apps that automatically read every message, but I would like an option to select message I want it to read out loud.

Handcent SMS - this app has a popup text notification that has an option for the text to be read out loud and it works very well. You can have individual texts read to you in the main app by ong pressing on the text bubble and selecting that option from the menu that pops up. BTW you can perform voice to text but you need to speak like a robot to do it.
