I don't want to have to install apps like metamorph though so the manual procedure is what I prefer - plus that way I actually learn something! I do not see it in the glassblue framework-res.apk on Smoked Glass 6.0.1

I DO see status_bar_background.png and it seems like it may be file I am after, but its only 176x176px. If this is the case then it is just tiled? It can't be upscaled, well I guess it COULD but wouldn't that be really ugly in some cases?

    Notification Pulldown Editing [SOLVED... kinda]

So that IS the file to be edited, (confirmed that by peering into the dflarge.zip file from the droidforums.net theme). I just enlarged my 176x176px SG 6.0.1 version and added the cute little android to it and added replaced the status_bar_background.png in framework-res.apk with my edited copy. I then removed the META-INF folder from the APK, resigned the APK and pushed it to /system/framework/framework-res.apk while in recovery.

I then rebooted and hoped. The phone booted! I was really shocked.

However, no android in the corner of my pulldown.. AdamZ must do things differently. His status_bar_background.png is indexed, I had to change to RGB mode in order to properly edit my file with GIMP, maybe that has something to do with it. I put it back into the APK in RGB mode. Back when I was cooking ROMs for Windows Mobile I would try to keep as many images as I could get away with indexed so they stayed small. At this point I just want to get the image to change and I will worry about optimization later

I did not know you could push files INTO apk's on the device. I know you can push files to the device, but an APK is just a file that is an archive of other files...

What I did was take the framework-res.apk from the SG 6.0.1 tgz, unsign it by removing the META-INF folder, replace the status_bar_background.png file in the archive. Then I ran the APK through the signing batch script and pushed the resulting APK FILE to the device overwriting the current APK.

APK's are very new to me. The idea of deploying apps in archives is not new, but having all of them seemingly expand into RAM at runtime is so odd. Very convenient though.. That may not be how it works. I don't know, I am still very much a n00b to android. It looks like I am going to bite the bullet and install metamorph and see what it does, see if it actually replaces files in APK or not...

    Notification Pulldown Editing [SOLVED... kinda]

So I installed metamorph, stole the dflarge pulldown theme and converted the .thm to aml using the metamorph thm to xml tool from XDA. I have learned that metamorph DOES replace files in APK's (in this case, framework-res.apk). I still have not been able to do this without metamorph, but metamorph is really a sweet little utility so I don't feel too bad about leaning on it.

    Here is the outcome:

Me: "Hey look at what I just added to my phone, you'll like it, it's cute.."
    Wife: "I bet it isn't."
    Me: "just look?"
Wife: "Oh hey, that is cute! I want a droid too!"

    lol

Pulldown editor is a glitchy beast... like you can't rotate the phone while in the editor or it fails... usually takes me a couple tries before it works right...

Pull 'framework-res.apk' off of the phone using ADB. Open the file using '7zip' (do not unzip) and go to 'res' then 'drawable-hdpi' and replace 'status_bar_background.png' with the new image (you can copy it from the droidhead zip). Close everything out and push the file back to the phone. I've done this many times and it works great!

yes this is what I do, though I use winrar. Many people have mentioned pushing files INTO existing APK's using adb and I have no idea how that works. the adb manual from google does not even mention it.. I am beginning to think that this is what people mean when they say "use adb to push files into apk"

    Thanks for the response,
