Horrible color banding on custom background

Hello all. Here's my predicament. I made a custom background for my Motorola Droid, made sure to get the dimensions right (960x854) and made sure it was in the best format (24 bit png) but when I upload it to my phone and try to set it as a background there's this horrible banding. This doesn't happen when I'm viewing it in the picture gallery and there's no banding in the default backgrounds with similar colors and gradients so...what's up?

Have you tried saving it in a different format?

PS. You could be a great web graphics artist

Thanks. I've done some web design work before. I tried it as a JPG and it had the same banding problem. It wouldn't recognize it as a BMP or a TIF. I guess I need to make a background with more solid colors in order for it to show up good.

Did you ever find a cure for the banding issue?

I've tried everything to eliminate it, but all attempts have failed.

I've tried reducing color palettes, merging layers, removing alpha blending, different blending options, TIF, PNG, JPEG, all w/o success.

These AMOLED displays do some internal dithering, but there has to be a way to avoid this from occurring.

Share with us any suggestions you might have and i'll do the same if I figure out how to avoid this. It's a shame a phone with such a beautiful display suffers such a prevalent issue.

Cool background image. I've tried it on my Droid as well and have the same issue. The banding is surely noticeable but what's interesting is that I also see it in the gallery. I suspect it has something to do with how many simultaneous colors the Droid is capable of displaying at once.

There are some fine detail in the upper half of the image that also does not come through as clearly. I think your image is too much for the Droid to handle haha.

I'd like to get back to this topic .... has anyone done any other research/made any progress? Or is this "a feature"?
It basically prevents me from using any wallpaper with gradient colors ...

There's an app in the market called "Wallpaper Set and Save" and it works some magic by setting any wallpaper and fixing banding. It's free and really small in space req's. Pick your desired wallpaper from the dropdown box (it defaults to finding a "wallpapers" folder on your SD) and hit set. No more banding at all!

What you may want to try is this trick in PhotoShop (I use CS5 so this may not apply to you)...

Under "File" select "Save for Web & Devices..." in your file menu.

Select "PNG-24" under presets and save from there.

    This may help.

Also I'm at work and looking at the image that was originally posted... I can see the banding in the image on my monitor. This is leading me to believe that you might be creating the image on one screen (and it may look fine), but then looking at it on your Droid's screen which may be allowing you to see the image's "imperfections".

What you could do is try to darken the image with a multiply layer of black at a very low opacity percentage until the banding is eliminated on your device screen.
