Newbie!

Hi everyone. I have a Verizon HTC Droid Eris. So far it's been awesome. Anyhow, my coworker recently rooted my phone. I don't know what that means, but ever since then my google maps have been force closing on me, but before then it was showing my location to be in the middle of the ocean. Since he rooted the phone it's been showing my accurate location, but before I could even input an address for directions it force closes. On top of that, when I tried to update my google maps it would say that the installation was unsuccessful. Please help.
