Browsers Won't Allow Text Column Edges to Stay on Screen on Magnification

I used to be able to read text on a full size web site with the native Android browser by pinching the text to magnify it, at which time the edges of the column of text would align with the edges of the screen, making it readable without having to scroll back and forth. My device does not do this anymore, no matter which browser I use such as Firefox or Opera or how much I play with the settings. I'm thinking this happened with the last system update, 2.3 I believe. Is there a fix for this as it is extremely annoying?
