Droid X has problems when not connected to power

Hope someone can help me. My Droid X works fine when it's connected to a power cord. When it's disconnected, it will sometime turn off by itself and go dark. When I try to turn on the phone, it sometimes it brings up the little green droid icon and won't do anything until I reset the battery. Has anyone experienced this? Is this a battery problem or a bigger problem with the machine? Thanks.
