NEWBIE....hellllp w/ htc eris please (:

Hi,
I am a relatively new user to the Android family so I have a few questions I need answered if you'd be so kind! (:
I currently am using my refurbished LG Ally...which I hateeee with a passion. It is nothing but a pain in the rear. I ordered an HTC Eris yesterday and it should be here within a week. Everyone's reviews on the phone were great, and because I am on a relatively low budget, I'm hoping this new phone will last a little while!
Will the Eris automatically update from 1.5? Or will I be stuck with that?
What is the newest software that will update on the Eris? (2.2, 2.3?)

I've done most of my research but those were two questions I still had. If I have anymore I'll be sure to post but any help you could provide would be great! Thanks!

The Eris was updated to 2.1 and will no longer be receiving official updates. If your Eris comes with 1.5 then it will prompt you to update (to eventually get to 2.1). The only way android 2.2+ will run on your Eris is if you root it and install custom roms/software. I hope this helps answer some of your questions.

Thanks! I am very confused about rooting and the more I read, the more confused I seem to get! And I'm scares of messing it up! I really want gingerbread on my Eris but I guess I'll have to wait until I figure it out completely. (Ideally, I'd like to do it before I put ANYTHING on my new phone...)
Also, does 2.1 have navigation on it for gps

Regarding rooting, I would read, read, and read some more to figure out exactly what it does and what it allows you to do. I'm not 100% sure about navigation on 2.1 but I do know that 2.1 was the update that enabled the feature. I would visit the Droid Eris hacks section to read up more on rooting /installing gingerbread.
