I just rooted and want to try different ROMs, from reading this forum it seems:

"If I am doing this right, I will have to factory reset before installing a new ROM (in my case, from Clockwork). But I can get all my data back by restoring backups."

Restoring will restore old apps/data into a new ROM?

not factory reset, usually wipe data/cache in custom recovery.

to get apps+settings back, i recommend Titanium backup or Mybackup Pro. both will back up apps and app settings.

a restore in recovery is like a full image of your phone; when it is restored, everything will go back to the way it was when you did the backup.

I have seen a few people make backups of only data when doing a backup then restore that after a new ROM is in place, but i never did that and it might cause problems with the new ROM.
