    If I install a different rom, will I lose my apps and settings?

    it is always safest to do a fresh backup. this wayyou can restore missing apps.

    I have swapped several times with out backups and never lost an app or setting

    ^^agreed. if using SPRecovery, id do a whip of data and cache to make sure theres no problems going to the new ROM
