    What is an Android ROM?

    My dad thinks an Android ROM is a chip on the motherboard that you can't do anything with. If that's true then why is there a section for downloading custom ROM's?
    Please give me an explanation of what it is so I can prove my dad wrong.

    ROM = Read Only Memory

    It is the operating system basically.
    Custom ROMs are modified operating systems.

    Your dad is right and wrong. In regards to Android, he is wrong, but in terms of older software he is right.

    Such as the pre 1996 computer controlled vehicles. They had PROM chips you could burn/reburn for performance.
