If you need to get root first start here: Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version

If you are already rooted and wants to try a custom rom, i recommend Sourcery Rom.
My personal favorite, link in my signature.

If you want to stick with a very solid Froyo ROM, check out Raidzero. I had once given up on Froyo ROMs altogether but Raidzero's Baseline 0.5 made me a believer again. It's extremely fast and extremely stable. Love it.

Good thing about rooting your D1 is that you can use Nandroid (backup/recovery) and flash as many ROMs as you want!

    I'm with Simply Stunning 5.3 from ChevyNo1
Gingerbread: Liked Miui but that uses too much battery, but the looks is amazing
And I tried a lot such as cyanogenmod, project elite, steel droid but all are kinda alike but with lil differences
Froyo: not a fan of it
