it allows access to system files the customs roms are because of a custom recovery

so you can theme your phone (not recommended with out a custom recovery) wifi tether and some other cool things

Ah, didn't think of that but makes sense. Thanks for the info.

Those that root, I would not recommend messing with system files until there is a way to fix it like an sbf file. For now rooting should be used for apps unless you are a dev and know what you are doing have money to blow.
