Google Patent Suggests New Nexus or Motorola Phone with Multiple LED Flashes

It looks like the minds at Google are continuously cranking out intriguing ideas to forge into reality. A new patent for Google suggests we may someday see a new Nexus or Motorola phone with multiple LED flashes. The patent is very in-depth, and even covers multiple angles and configurations of these additional flashes. It certainly gets the imagination wondering/wandering...

It also begs the question, "Why would you want multiple flashes?"

As it turns out, there are at least a couple of very good reasons to want multiple LED flashes. First, LED flashes try to make a decent approximation of a traditional Xenon flash for the small space and low-power consumption they use, but, they really don't quite cut it in the brightness department. By adding multiple LED flashes, you can keep the power consumption and space down, but by having them flash simultaneously you can potentially deliver Xenon flash characteristics. This could give you dramatically better lighting for photos, and virtually eliminate shadows (one of the common complaints about phone-based pics).

Second, by flashing the LEDs in intervals that are slightly offset to each other, you could achieve some potentially impressive visual effects with your photos, from fancy HDR amalgamations to complex compound 3D images and more. The possibilities are fascinating to contemplate.

If there are any accomplished photographers in the forums today, please share any other possibilities you can envision with a setup like this.

Maybe this might make an appearance on the X Phone? I really do hope it actually launches with that name just as a small jab at the iPhone.

Oh great, no longer can you just hurt a persons eyes with one flash, now you can completely blind them with multiple flashes.

The flashes in a ring is actually very nice, for portraits. It gives you a nice even lighting on the face, no harsh shadows. Much like the ring-lights portrait photographers use with dSLRs.

Self portraits just got bumped to the next level. lol

Not only would you get rid of shadows but also eliminate that single big bright spot you normally get with the flash focused on the subject especially if they were angled out slightly.

Also if you get the sync and speed right with them you could possibly even do some stop motion by using them like a strobe and get some half way decent action shots with it.

You would have to have control of the shutter speed. i havent seen a camera phone really give that option.....or aperture for that matter.

Also, there will still be shadows. the light will just be more evenly balanced on the person or thing you are taking pictures of. instead of just a bunch of blow out light in the middle it will be more evenly distributed....in theory...

I think properly synced flashes one each side(or 6 if LED) of the phone would do a better job vs a ring personally. the middle 2 centered and the rest off center slighty(the second slightly and the other slighty more) via the width of the camera.
